- Using a pre-shared key with Windows 10 causes a remediation error to show in Intune. When this happens, the Wi-Fi profile is properly assigned to the device, and the profile works as expected.
- If you export a Wi-Fi profile that includes a pre-shared key, be sure the file is protected. The key is in plain text, so it's your responsibility to protect the key.
Before you begin

- It may be easier to copy the code from a computer that connects to that network, as described later in this article.
- You can add multiple networks and keys by adding more OMA-URI settings.
- For iOS/iPadOS, use Apple Configurator on a Mac station to set up the profile.
- PSK requires a string of 64 hexadecimal digits, or a passphrase of 8 to 63 printable ASCII characters. Some characters, such as asterisk ( * ), aren't supported.
Create a custom profile
Sign in to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center.
Select Devices > Configuration profiles > Create profile.
Enter the following properties:
- Name: Enter a descriptive name for the policy. Name your policies so you can easily identify them later. For example, a good policy name is Custom OMA-URI Wi-Fi profile settings for Android device administrator devices.
- Description: Enter a description for the profile. This setting is optional, but recommended.
- Platform: Choose your platform.
- Profile type: Select Custom.
In Settings, select Add. Enter a new OMA-URI setting with the following properties:
Name: Enter a name for the OMA-URI setting.
Description: Enter a description for the OMA-URI setting. This setting is optional, but recommended.
OMA-URI: Enter one of the following options:
- For Android:
./Vendor/MSFT/WiFi/Profile/SSID/Settings
- For Windows:
./Vendor/MSFT/WiFi/Profile/SSID/WlanXml
Note
Be sure to include the dot character at the beginning.
SSID is the SSID for which you're creating the policy. For example, if the Wi-Fi is named
Hotspot-1
, enter./Vendor/MSFT/WiFi/Profile/Hotspot-1/Settings

Data Type: Select String.
Value: Paste your XML code. See the examples in this article. Update each value to match your network settings. The comments section of the code includes some pointers.
When you're done, select OK > Create to save your changes.
Your profile is shown in the profiles list. Next, assign this profile to your user groups. This policy can only be assigned to user groups.
The next time each device checks in, the policy is applied, and a Wi-Fi profile is created on the device. The device can then connect to the network automatically.
Android or Windows Wi-Fi profile example
The following example includes the XML code for an Android or Windows Wi-Fi profile. The example is provided to show proper format and provide more details. It's only an example, and isn't intended as a recommended configuration for your environment.
What you need to know

Create the XML file from an existing Wi-Fi connection
You can also create an XML file from an existing Wi-Fi connection. On a Windows computer, use the following steps:
Create a local folder for the exported W-Fi- profiles, such as c:WiFi.
Open up a command prompt as an administrator (right-click

exports the key in plain text, which is required to successfully use the profile.
After you have the XML file, copy and paste the XML syntax into OMA-URI settings > Data type. Create a custom profile (in this article) lists the steps.

Best practices
Before you deploy a Wi-Fi profile with PSK, confirm that the device can connect to the endpoint directly.
When rotating keys (passwords or passphrases), expect downtime and plan your deployments. Consider pushing new Wi-Fi profiles during non-working hours. Also, warn users that connectivity may be affected.
For a smooth transition, be sure the end user's device has an alternate connection to the Internet. For example, the end user can switch back to Guest WiFi (or some other WiFi network) or have cellular connectivity to communicate with Intune. The extra connection allows the user to receive policy updates when the corporate WiFi Profile is updated on the device.

Step 1: Gather WiFi Details
To distribute a QR code for WiFi you will need the following:
SSID
Password for SSID
Network Type (in this example WEP)

You can see in the screenshot that there are loads of options available.
In our case select Wifi Login (Android Only)*
*We do not use iDevices here so I cannot comment on whether or not this will work for iDevices or if there is a way to make this work.

Network Type
Step 5: Optional - Select Colors for your QR Code
I skipped this step but if you would like to make your QR code pretty adjust that here.
Step 6: NOT RECOMMENDED - Optional - Download QR Code
I left the website up as is on my laptop during our presentation so folks could scan the QR code only during my presentation.

If you have a Guest network that is not tied to your corporate network you could certainly make this code accessible more freely but I still don't recommend it.
Step 7: Scan the Barcode with Barcode Scanner or other App
This is self explanatory but you actually have to scan the code for this to work. The screenshot shows what happens when you do that.
I didn't plan it but I got a picture of SpiceRex approving of QR Codes
For our situation this was the best option to do a mass distribution of our corporate WiFi to our new Android users. Please consider all security risks before implementing this in your own environment.

Update - 8/7/2012 - We rolled out a new wireless code today to all of our users. We sent out an email to our uses who had Android phones reminding them to have Barcode Scanner installed. With the exception of a few older devices, the Android devices took the least amount of time.
In addition to that it looks as if the information will not be displayed for the WiFi connection so it's a bit more secure.

What code scanner did they use? I tried using this with the built in AT&T code scanner and it just sits there saying 'connecting to..T:WPA' but never does anything else. However, QR Barcode Scanner says Not Recognized but shows the SSID and the key. I would feel a lot better if this just configured the device to use the Wifi instead of showing them the key. I'm hoping that's not just wishful thinking.

@Tony the scanner we used is listed in the References section above. Also you will not be able to keep them from seeing the key which is why I suggested not downloading or sharing this app.
Our code is so outrageously complicated that I had to come up with a quicker solution. Your mileage may vary.

Very nice. Going to have to check this out. Note on your reference to the barcode scanner. It's giving a broken link (it's trying to go to http://https//play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.zxing.client.android&hl=en ). I just copied the link location and took out the extra http: and added a colon after the https and it directed me to the app.

I can see how this would be useful if you had a number of guests attending a venue and wanted to offer use of the wifi independant from the corporate network. Or had a special guest network for making presentation materials or online resources available for access.
You could generate a new SSID and password for each occasion hosted and just print off the appropriate QR code and paste it up by the door on the way in.
